Have you or a family member been diagnosed with heart failure?
Many people mistakenly believe that heart failure means that the heart has stopped or is about to stop. Heart failure simply means that the heart is not pumping blood through the body as well as it should.
Symptoms of heart failure can sometimes be hard to identify. Symptoms can include difficulty breathing, fatigue and—in more severe cases—congestion in the lungs and swelling of the legs and feet. This is why heart failure is sometimes called congestive heart failure.
Using an integrated and collaborative approach, heart failure is diagnosed, staged and treated at Northwestern Medicine Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute with a wide array of comprehensive therapies and treatments ranging from carefully chosen medications, to ventricular assist devices and complex heart surgery, including heart transplantation.
Northwestern Memorial Hospital was the first program in Illinois to use the TransMedics Organ Care System (OCS™) for heart transplantation. This innovative system increases the number of available hearts for transplant by up to 30 percent in the United States.
